A candy shop bursting with color, but instead of sweets, it's fabric that fills every shelf.
That's the feeling Angela Hansen set out to create with The Fabric Candy Shoppe, her shop based in New York's Finger Lakes region.
Quilting found her the same way it finds so many of us, through one simple project that turned into something much bigger, and these days Halloween runs through everything she does.
She's also stepping into an exciting new chapter, opening her very first physical storefront this year.
Personal Background
Could you tell us a bit about yourself? (location, age, educational background, …) Who is behind The Fabric Candy Shoppe?
Hi! I'm Angela, owner of The Fabric Candy Shoppe in New York's beautiful Finger Lakes region. I recently celebrated my 50th birthday, and it truly feels like life is entering one of its most exciting chapters.
Before opening my business, I earned a degree in Criminal Justice and worked with at-risk youth and individuals who benefited from additional support and guidance. That experience shaped the way I approach my business today—building genuine relationships, creating a welcoming environment, and always putting people first.
The name The Fabric Candy Shoppe came from the feeling I wanted every customer to have: the excitement of walking into a candy store, surrounded by beautiful colors, endless inspiration, and something new to discover.
Quilting Journey
How did you first get into quilting? When did you decide to turn this passion into a business by opening your shop?
Like many quilters, my journey began with a simple project and quickly grew into a passion. I fell in love with the creativity of quilting, the endless possibilities of fabric, and the joy of making something by hand.
That passion led me to start The Fabric Candy Shoppe in 2012. Over the years, I've discovered that one of my favorite creative outlets is curating color—bringing fabrics together in unexpected ways through exclusive quilt kits, curated bundles, and fresh interpretations of favorite patterns.
Shop Story and Style
What’s the story behind The Fabric Candy Shoppe? When did it start, and how would you describe its personality, style, and size?
The Fabric Candy Shoppe was built on the idea that shopping for fabric should be inspiring, creative, and fun.
While we've always been an online shop, 2026 marks an exciting new chapter as we prepare to open our first storefront. It's a space designed not only for shopping, but for gathering, creating, and sharing our love of quilting.
Our style is modern, vibrant, and full of personality—with a healthy dose of spooky charm. Halloween isn't just a season at The Fabric Candy Shoppe—it's part of who we are. We never miss an opportunity to bring in incredible Halloween collections, and our customers know they can count on us for the latest spooky inspiration.
Product Offerings & Special Collections
What types of fabrics do you focus on? How do you offer them to customers—by the yard, as kits, or with custom options?
We're proud to carry an extensive selection of Ruby Star Society and Tula Pink collections and coordinating basics, along with thoughtfully curated fabrics from many of today's favorite designers.
What truly sets The Fabric Candy Shoppe apart is our love of color. Whether we're creating exclusive quilt kits, curating fabric bundles, or helping customers select fabrics for their next quilt, we enjoy showing quilters fresh combinations that inspire creativity and confidence.
Inspiration and Trends
Are there any collections, brands, or unique products you’re especially proud to carry?
Inspiration comes from everywhere—fabric collections, nature, artwork, and sometimes even a single color that sparks an idea. I especially enjoy taking a beautiful fabric line and building a palette around it that feels fresh, balanced, and inspiring.
While I certainly pay attention to what's new in the quilting industry, I don't choose fabrics simply because they're trending. I look for collections that tell a story, evoke emotion, or offer something unexpected. Whether it's bold modern prints, rich color combinations, or my ever-growing love of Halloween and spooky-themed fabrics, I enjoy curating products that inspire creativity and help quilters create something uniquely their own.
Additional Services
Do you offer any other quilting-related services, like pattern design, long-arming, or classes?
As we expand with our new storefront, we'll also be expanding the ways we serve our quilting community. One exciting addition will be longarming services, giving customers another trusted resource to help finish their quilts.
The new space will also allow us to offer quilting classes, creative workshops, and maker-focused events. Our goal is to create a welcoming place where people can learn, connect, and enjoy creativity together.
Online Presence
Where can people find your shop online? (Website, social media handles, online marketplaces). How do you use online platforms to connect with your audience and fellow quilters?
You can find The Fabric Candy Shoppe online at www.thefabriccandyshoppe.com.
We're also active on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, where we share new arrivals, creative inspiration, exclusive projects, and a behind-the-scenes look at everything happening at The Shoppe.
Upcoming News and Projects
Are there any exciting new projects, events, or collaborations coming up that you’d like to share with the community
This year is an exciting one for The Fabric Candy Shoppe. Along with opening our storefront, I'm looking forward to introducing even more exclusive quilt kits, curated projects, and creative inspiration for our customers.
I'm also excited about future collaborations within the quilting industry and continuing to develop unique experiences that inspire makers to explore color and create with confidence.
QuiltInk Experience
How has QuiltInk been useful for your shop or customers? Any favorite tools or ways it’s made things easier?
I've really enjoyed getting to know QuiltInk over the past few months. One of my favorite parts of quilting is exploring color, and QuiltInk makes it easy to experiment with different combinations and visualize ideas before bringing them to life.
As I continue expanding our exclusive kits and Block of the Month programs, QuiltInk has become an important part of my creative process. It helps transform inspiration into designs that customers can easily envision and enjoy making themselves.
My favorite feature is the ability to quickly explore and compare different color combinations. As someone who loves curating fabrics and creating fresh colorways, it's an invaluable design tool.
What stands out most is how intuitive and inspiring the platform is. It encourages creativity, makes experimentation effortless, and helps both shops and quilters imagine the possibilities before a single piece of fabric is cut.
